Bikeable Jo is in America!
I am currently visiting the University of Virginia in Charlottesville leading a group of Scottish students. Originally being from the States, it’s amazing to see my home country through the eyes of these guys. These two weeks have been full of baseball games, hamburgers, interesting conversations on the American education system, trips to the emergency room (apparently Scottish fingers and American footballs don’t mix), great pints and even better southern hospitality.
Charlottesville has been a pleasant surprise. This wee gem has an incredible history associated with Thomas Jefferson (and Dave Matthews!) and there is a great community vibe. From the recently renovated Jefferson Community Centre and the Tom Tom Founders Festival to the weekly farmers’ market – the sense of community is oozing from this place.
Even better, it’s bikeable! There are students stylishly embracing the slow bike movement to cool dads leading tandems with kids in tow – you get all sorts here. There are cycle lanes about the city, bike racks on buses, and bike socials all over town.
Thanks for a great time, C’ville. I think it’s about time to introduce this sunburn to the grey skies of Edinburgh….
